Skills and the Online Degree

Some students are not just interested in the paper qualification that comes with the online degree. They are actually interested in developing their skills in such a way that they will become effective employees. That means that the learning process moves beyond the academic content to the practical application of the knowledge that is found in the text books. This is an objective that employers can sympathize with.

Choices for the graduate

In selecting the specific type of online degree that they are going to pursue, students will have a keen focus on the “skills set”. The world of work today is driven by skills. People that do not have skills will find it very difficult to implement many of the work based projects that are assigned to them. Employers are also wising up to the fact that someone can be very educated whilst being incompetent at the time. The “skills set” bridges this gap and allows the employer to make an informed decision during the recruitment or training process.

In the search for skills, the artistic courses have been neglected. For example an online degree in “contemporary art” might be neglected by a student that is looking for a promotion in their current job. This is an unfortunate outcome that is associated with a competitive education system. People are no longer learning for the mere sake of acquiring information. They are learning in order to improve their economic circumstances. That means that they ignore the unusual courses that do not appear to be marketable in the short run.
